Apple Computer, Inc.--Served as senior advisor to executive team responsible for multi-phase project: (1) Strategic Positioning Assessment yielded a rank-ordered list of enterprise success factors commensurate with Apple's production and distribution requirements and five-year marketing plan, (2) Comparative Community & Site Assessment yielded the Top-Five Cities-Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Raleigh-Durham, Toronto-from over fifty considered, (3) Site Visits ranked the five cities on workforce excellence, technological infrastructure, quality-of-life, and other factors, (4) Negotiations yielded incentives for: (i) property and infrastructure, (ii) taxes and financial, (iii) recruitment and training, and (iv) relocation and retention. Allergan, Inc.--Led joint Fantus-Allergan team responsible for muli-phase project (see Apple, above, for project phases and negotiation categories) with result that a major production and distribution center was established in Waco. Carnation / CalReCo / NESTEC--Led studies leading to significant plant investments in Bakersfield and other locations selected to optimize Carnation's national production and distribution network while improving product quality and increasing workforce productivity. CTEC / General Electric / Rohr--Served as senior advisor to executive team responsible for strategic location decisions designed to enhance marketplace responsiveness, oganizational effectiveness, and operational productivity. Over 100 communities were assessed with major plant investments made in: Fairhope, AL; Arkadelphia, Heber Springs, and Sheridan, AR; two plants in San Marcos, TX; and Hagerstown, MD. The Doctors' Company--Served as senior advisor to executive team responsible for selection of the optimal California community for relocation of 275-person Santa Monica headquarters. Napa Valley was selected (see Apple for project phases and negotiation categories). Developed and implemented: (1) Relocation Policy & Cost Analysis model used to formulate policy options and assess cost impacts for three scenarios: best-reasonable, most-likely, and worst-reasonable, and (2) Strategic Scenario Analysis Model (SSAM) that allowed executive team to ask "what if?" questions associated with operating costs (e.g., workforce costs, real estate costs) and to observe impact on return on investment and pay-back period on computer-generated group display. Golden West / World Savings--Served as senior advisor to exectuive team responsible for a 600-to-900 person back office operation. A three-phase project (Apple sans negotiation) resulted in an assessement of over 30 cities with site visits to the Top-7-Nashville, Des Moines, Omaha, Colorado Springs, San Marcos, New Braunfels, and San Antonio. San Antonio was selected as optimal. Great American Life Insurance--Served as senior advisor to top executive team for Relocation Feasiblity Study. Cincinnati was selected. Home Savings of America--Led team that selected Charlotte, NC, for an Eastern Operations Center to employ 2,000 knowledge workers for loan processing, teleprocessing, data processing, and other information age functions. A network analysis study to minimize telecommunications costs, small package distribution costs, and air cargo costs was performed. Quantum Corporation--Served as strategic facilities planning advisor. Developed strategies to lower occupancy costs-while maintaining job satisfaction-through modular positioning, adjacency analysis, and information technology. Return to the RWA Backgound page. |
